Many  years  ago  I  spent  some  time  working  with  horses and  I  will  never  forget  the  thrill  of  galloping  along  some  of  Sligo’s  beautiful  beaches . Giving  a  good  horse  the  reins  and  letting  it  go  at  its  fastest  on  a  perfect  stretch  of  sandy  beach  is  an  incredible  experience.

It  left  me  with  a  fondness  for  horses  and  whenever  I,m  out  and  about  I  find  myself  glancing  into  fields  whenever  I  see  one.  Trying  to  photograph  them  is  easier  said  than  done  as  I  find  they  are  either  over friendly  and  come  too  close  to  the  camera  or  are  very  wary  and  head  for  the  hills  as  soon  as  you  open  the  gate. That  said  here’s  some  of  my  favourite  shots.

Three  small  rivers  which  run  off  Cuilcagh  Mountain  emerge  from  underground  at  the  Marble  Arch  Caves  and  form  the  Claddagh  River . The  Marble  Arch  itself  was  formed  by  the  river  eroding  the  limestone  rock  over  many  years.

I  had  visited  the  Marble  Arch  Caves  many  years  ago  but  had  never  walked  along  the  Claddagh  River though  I  had  driven  past  it  many  times.  I  always  seemed  to  be  in  a  hurry  and  usually  glanced  over  the  bridge  as  I  drove  by.  Silly  me ! The  Claddagh  is  a  stunning  wild  mountain  river  strewn  with  moss  covered  boulders  of  all  shapes  and  sizes  and  endless  small  torrents  and  waterfalls.

Courtesy  of  Fermanagh  council  a  smooth  gravel  path  discreetly  follows  the  river  all  the  way  up  to  the  Marble  Arch  itself.  A  wooden  walkway  then  crosses  the  arch  and  continues  up  to  the  Marble  Arch  Visitor  Centre  where  guided  tours  of  the  caves  are  available. The  river  gorge  becomes  deeper  the  further  up  you  go  and  its  slopes  are  covered  in  native  oak  and  ash.
